Daytime & Nighttime Moisturizers: Do You Need Both?

Even skincare newbies tend to know the importance of using a good moisturizer because the difference in hydrated vs. tight, dry skin is so easy to see and feel. When your face is moisturized, the appearance and texture is not only softer and smoother, fine lines and wrinkles are plumped and less noticeable. Beauty bonus: makeup glides on much more easily to hydrated skin.

But a question we often get is whether or not it is necessary to use a different facial cream in the daytime than you use at night. Actually, it is! Day and night creams are not just a marketing gimmick to sell additional products. In fact, the difference between the two formulations is like …. well, night and day.

Day creams and night creams are actually intended for two completely different purposes. To reap the full benefit from your skin care routine, it is absolutely important to use both.

AM: Protect and Prevent

Daytime moisturizers are intended to protect the skin from environmental stressors such as UV rays, pollutants and allergens, among others, and prevent the damage they cause. Day creams usually include an SPF, that in combination with stable antioxidants and nourishing emollients, helps create a protective barrier to both defend against environmental assault and trap in moisture for a brighter, more youthful complexion.

In addition, day creams tend to be lighter, faster absorbing and buildable for smoother makeup application. When skin is adequately hydrated, foundations and powders won’t settle into (and highlight) creases and fine lines.

PM: Recover and Repair

Moisturizers designed for nighttime are all about recovery and repair. Not only are they often made up of slightly thicker emollients, they generally contain glycolic and other mildly exfoliating acids for polishing skin while you sleep. Retinols and retinoids are included to plump and smooth skin, prevent breakouts and encourage cell turnover. While highly effective in their skin renewing potential, PM formulations can increase the skin’s photosensitivity, so they are best used when you (and the sun) have gone to bed.

A Complete Skincare Routine

No matter what time of day it is, your moisturizer can include powerhouse ingredients like peptides, Vitamins C & E and hyaluronic acid designed to boost collagen production and combat the noticeable effects of aging, like wrinkles, dark spots and hyperpigmentation. But to see the best results and most noticeable effect from your skin care products your routine should include an AM and PM formula.
